It boasts an all-glass design, bringing it consistent with big-name flagships such because the Samsung Galaxy S9 and iPhone X, a big 6.28-inch show full with the on-trend notch, dual rear-facing cameras, both fingerprint and face unlock, and as much as 256GB of storage.

Finally, there's the brand new top-end 8GB/256GB model, which officially takes the title of the costliest OnePlus smartphone ever. This OnePlus 6 worth for this configuration is $629 (£569).
That's still cheaper than the likes of the Galaxy S9, iPhone 8, LG G7 ThinQ and Sony Xperia XZ2, but should you're in search of one thing extra reasonably priced chances are you'll need to take a look at the Honor 10.
For those who're in India or China, the 8GB/256GB configuration of the OnePlus 6 is actually a limited-edition Marvel Avengers device, obtainable from Might 29 for Rs 44,999.
- OnePlus' biggest-ever show at 6.28 inches
- Full HD, Full Optic AMOLED panel with 19:9 facet ratio
- 84% screen-to-body ratio thanks partially to notch
The OnePlus 6 show is among the huge new options on the telephone. Actually, it’s the most important display the firm has ever squeezed into a telephone, with the 6.28-inch Full Optic AMOLED panel eclipsing the 6.1-inch providing discovered on the 5T.
OnePlus has continued to help the now-popular 19:9 facet ratio too, supplying you with a taller display that gives up more on display once you’re scrolling lists akin to your Twitter feed.
Whereas the show may be greater, the decision stays the identical at ‘simply’ Full HD. That’s 2280 x 1080 to be actual, which ensures it retains the 402 pixels-per-inch density of previous OnePlus flagships.
Nevertheless, in a world the place QHD is quick turning into the norm on the prime end of the cellular market, the display decision on the OnePlus 6 is a key area the place the firm has seemed to cut a corner in an try and hold prices down.
On its own the display seems brilliant and vibrant, providing a lovely degree of element. Slide it alongside a Galaxy S9 and also you’ll see the display on the OnePlus 6 isn’t quite nearly as good - there’s no HDR help right here either - however when you think about the worth tag of this telephone it’s not likely a problem.
With the reduction in bezel above and under the display the OnePlus 6 additionally boasts a 84% screen-to-body ratio that may doubtless please followers of outright show actual property. Nevertheless this has come at a worth: the inclusion of a divisive ‘notch’ on the prime of the display.
OnePlus tells us the notch wasn’t merely added as a ‘me too’ function though. A spokesperson for the firm informed TechRadar: "[OnePlus] absolutely appreciates the development for decreasing bezels and growing screen-to-body ratio. [We] thought long and exhausting over the choice [to include the notch].
"We need to ship the know-how that at present works the perfect and we have now to make certain of the know-how we put into our units, as we solely make one [device] at a time.
"[The notch] works one of the best in the mean time. Finally it’s not concerning the notch, it’s concerning the display."
Whether you’re for or towards the notch it serves a helpful objective on the OnePlus 6, housing the front-facing digital camera, earpiece, LED notification mild and ambient mild sensor.
For many who really don’t like the notch development you'll be able to successfully ‘disguise’ it on the OnePlus 6 by making the display either aspect of it black to create one steady bar.
The selection is yours then, however there is something quite satisfying about seeing your wallpaper wrap round both the aspect of the notch. Or perhaps that’s simply us.
Slide the OnePlus 6 out of its packaging and also you’ll see that it comes with a factory-fitted display protector, which is all the time nice, although it does detract barely from the general look of the telephone, in addition to being a little bit of a dust- and fingerprint-magnet.
It’s straightforward enough to take away, and doing so instantly makes the OnePlus 6 look more premium – however you’re then exposing the show to potential scratches and scuffs, so don’t swiftly whip it off as soon as you get it out the box.
- Premium, all-glass design using Gorilla Glass 5
- Alert slider has switched sides
- Improved water resistance and headphone jack retained
The very first thing you discover once you decide up the OnePlus 6 is that it feels totally different to earlier flagships from the firm, as it boasts a glass front and back slightly than the all-metal unibody that’s been in place because the OnePlus 3.
It’s Gorilla Glass 5 front and back, with the toughened safety hopefully which means it gained’t simply smash – however there’s no getting away from the truth that metallic doesn’t smash. For many who are more accident-prone the good news is that OnePlus supplies a transparent silicon cover within the field in the event you feel the handset needs a bit of additional safety and grip.
This isn’t the primary time OnePlus has utilized a glass body on a tool, with the OnePlus X additionally having the premium finish, however this is the firm’s first ‘flagship’ handset to get the remedy.
OnePlus claims it’s improved the water resistance on the OnePlus 6 over its predecessors, however the telephone doesn’t carry an IP score to ensure its survival when absolutely submerged in water.
Quite, OnePlus says it’s offered everyday, real-world safety for more doubtless situations, reminiscent of being caught in a rain bathe or accidently dropping your telephone into water and shortly pulling it out. Submerge this telephone at your personal danger.
At 155.7 x 75.4 x 7.75mm the OnePlus 6 is pretty much the identical measurement because the 5T; it’s a contact thicker and wider, however not quite as tall, which is spectacular contemplating the increase in display measurement right here.
At 177g it’s additionally heavier than the 5T, which tipped the scales at 163g. Holding the two phones in either hand the OnePlus 6 does feel slightly weightier, however there’s not much in it.
The facility/lock key sits in an easy-to-hit location on the best of the handset, and above it you’ll discover OnePlus’ common alert slider, allowing you to simply change between silent, vibrate and loud modes.
This has traditionally been on the left of the handset, but OnePlus has decided to modify it with the dual SIM tray on the 6 after suggestions from its group concerning the slider being troublesome to entry when utilizing flip-style covers.
The SIM tray has area for two nanoSIMs, and each slots permit for a 4G connection, which suggests you'll be able to profit from most knowledge speeds on two separate networks. That is particularly helpful for many who travel rather a lot, allowing you to keep your personal SIM lively whereas profiting from an area SIM from the nation you’re visiting, with decrease knowledge charges.
On the rear you’ll discover the fingerprint scanner under the protruding dual-camera stack; nevertheless you’ll notice that the scanner has been contracted.
Relatively than a circle, OnePlus has opted for a smaller, oval-shaped scanner here. We’re informed there are a number of causes for this, but the one OnePlus was prepared to tell us was that someone on the staff remarked that having a circle under the digital camera bump created the appearance of an exclamation mark.
OnePlus maintains that its fingerprint scanner can unlock the 6 in 0.2 seconds, and it’s definitely speedy, however it’s not the only biometric tech in play here.
The OnePlus 6 also comes with face unlock, which OnePlus says can acknowledge and unlock your telephone in zero.four seconds. We will affirm that it is impressively quick, and doesn’t require you to look instantly on the telephone, which makes it a much more usable and helpful function.
Face unlock on the OnePlus 6 does have to see your eyes to work though, so should you’re sporting sun shades it gained’t work. Similarly, when you’re in a darkish state of affairs it’ll also wrestle, though you possibly can head into the settings and select assistive lighting, which lights the display as much as illuminate your face.
In low-light conditions, corresponding to a dingy bar or on a road at night time, the OnePlus 6 can still determine your face and let you in.
There’s good news on the bottom of the handset too, as OnePlus has stored the headphone jack, allowing you to plug in your 3.5mm accessories without the need for an adapter.
There’s also a single down-firing speaker, which is slightly disappointing as it may be easily coated by your hand when the telephone is held in landscape orientation, and also you don’t get the stereo advantage of a two-speaker setup.
Something else that’s new for the OnePlus 6 is the selection of colours, with three choices out there at launch – that’s a break from custom, as up to now OnePlus has launched with just a single shade and launched further hues later.
Two months after launch OnePlus launched a fourth colour as nicely, with Purple being added to the road up. Nevertheless, which colors are on supply will rely upon which RAM/storage configuration you go for.
The Mirror Black model, which is the colour we’ve reviewed here, boasts a highly-polished, highly-reflective glass rear which is real fingerprint-magnet, and it’s the one shade the entry-level 6GB RAM/64GB storage choice is accessible in.
The Midnight Black OnePlus 6 has a extra matte finish, because of the layer under the glass being perforated with hundreds of holes to create a deep sheen. That is the only colour choice for the top-end 8GB/256GB configuration.
The 8GB/128GB version of the telephone is on the market in each black finishes, and in addition in two further colour options; Silk White and Purple. The Silk White OnePlus 6 has a unique end once more to the Gorilla Glass 5 on the rear, because of a layer of ‘powdered pearl’ beneath, giving it a extra ceramic feel and appear.
Meanwhile the restricted edition OnePlus 6 Pink is just like the Mirror Black variant, solely less reflective and less of a fingerprint magnet. It additionally features silver highlights across the fingerprint scanner and digital camera bulge on the rear. It's our favourite red-colored smartphone thus far.
- 3,300mAh battery lasts a day on a single cost
- Dash Charge provides you 60% in 30 minutes
The OnePlus 6 comes with a 3,300mAh battery, which is identical measurement as the facility packs found in the 5 and 5T.
With a bigger display here there’s more to energy, but OnePlus says it’s made the battery 10% extra environment friendly than its predecessor, which suggests the OnePlus 6 delivers comparable battery life to the phones it’s replacing.
In real-world usage we found that to be a day of average use on a single cost, which included two to 3 hours of music streaming, an hour or so of gaming, a number of snaps and a bunch of calls, messages, emails and social networking.
We usually crawled into bed at round 11pm (having taken the OnePlus 6 off charge at 7am) with at the least 15% left within the tank.
In case you do end up operating low the OnePlus 6 comes with a comparatively commonplace battery saver mode, which reduces background exercise, lowers display brightness and halts automated syncing.
There’s nothing extra excessive when it comes to energy saving, nevertheless it does assist to maintain that last 10% going for somewhat longer.
Once we first reviewed the OnePlus 6 be bemoaned the very fact you couldn't have the battery proportion shown in the notification bar. Nevertheless, the good news is OnePlus issued a software replace shortly after our evaluate went life, bringing with it this functionality.
We ran our 90-minute, Full HD battery check video on the OnePlus 6, with the brightness at most and accounts syncing over WiFi in the background.
The OnePlus 6 lost 15% of juice over the 90 minutes of video playback, which is an inexpensive end result that puts it in the mix with its flagship friends and on a par with most high-end phones.
While the OnePlus 6 does have a glass physique, it doesn’t help wireless charging – one of many advantages of glass bodies is that they allow wireless charging (an excessive amount of metallic interferes with electrical fields), and while it wasn’t even a risk with the metallic unibodies of earlier OnePlus handsets it’s a disgrace not to see it carried out here.
As with the display decision, the absence of wi-fi charging tech is more likely to be within the pursuits of preserving costs down. What you do get with the OnePlus 6 is Dash Charge, the agency’s own fast-charging know-how.
You get a Dash Charge plug within the box, and it may replenish the OnePlus 6 from zero% to 60% in 30 minutes; OnePlus says it provides you ‘a day’s energy in half an hour’, though we’ve discovered common day by day usage usually wants closer to 80%. Still, it’s quick, and that’s useful.
- Dual rear cameras, primary digital camera has OIS for improved low-light photographs
- 16MP front digital camera will get portrait mode post-launch
- Sluggish-motion video recording at 480fps
At first look the OnePlus 6 rear cameras don’t look all that totally different to these discovered on the back of the OnePlus 5T, with the 16MP and 20MP shooters nonetheless Sony sensors with f/1.7 apertures, nevertheless it’s not all equivalent.
OnePlus has elevated the dimensions of the sensor on the primary 16MP digital camera by 19%, and it now has a 1.22um pixel measurement (up from 1.12um), enabling it to tug in additional mild and thus perform higher in low-light circumstances.
That’s not all although, as the OnePlus 6 features OIS (optical picture stabilization) and EIS (digital image stabilization) on the rear 16MP snapper, further enhancing low-light photographs by decreasing digital camera shake and the resultant blurring.
Neither the OnePlus 5 nor the 5T featured OIS on their rear cameras, as a consequence of their location in the prime corner of the telephone not permitting enough area, but on the OnePlus 6 the cameras have been shifted to the middle – the thickest part of the handset – so there's room here.
The front-facing digital camera also gets a lift, with a 16MP sensor able to capturing portrait mode footage (though this might be enabled by way of a software program replace at a later date).
Slightly than using depth-sensing know-how, as is the case with the rear cameras, the front-facing portrait mode on the OnePlus 6 will work out what to blur with software program; this means you’ll nonetheless get the perfect portrait photographs from the rear setup, as the 2 cameras can gather extra correct depth knowledge.
The digital camera app on the OnePlus 6 is straightforward to use. There’s quick access to portrait and video modes from the primary display, with a sideways swipe switching you between modes.
Swipe up and you’ll get more options including professional mode, timelapse and panorama, while the 2x zoom toggle is ever-present in the viewfinder, enabling you to get closer to your topic without having to physically move.
Zooming in will end in an image with less readability, but the OnePlus 6 continues to be capable of capturing good photographs at this degree.
The primary advance with the OnePlus 6 is in its low-light capabilities, and there’s a stepped enchancment from what we experienced on the 5T, though it's a step quite than a leap.
We have been capable of hearth off fast photographs in dimly lit bars, and enjoying with the brightness in low mild settings leads to crisp, clear footage.
It’s an all-round succesful digital camera that does a superb job in quite a lot of situations, delivering all the things from nicely blurred backgrounds in Portrait mode to detailed close-up macros and sweeping panorama vistas.
A function new to OnePlus phones that’s been launched with the OnePlus 6 is slow-motion video recording, with the telephone capable of capture footage at up to 480fps.
That’s not fairly the tremendous slow-mo we’ve seen from the Samsung Galaxy S9 or Sony Xperia XZ2, however it’s a welcome addition to a handset that’s comfortably cheaper than both of these rivals.
Video recorded at 480fps is captured at 720p; you possibly can swap to 240fps at 1080p for a higher-resolution outcome, although your slow-mo footage gained’t be as sluggish. What’s unique to the OnePlus 6, though, is its capacity to seize a full minute of slow-motion footage, which equals around six minutes of video when performed again.
Once captured, you possibly can simply select how much of your video is slowed down – it doesn’t have to be the complete minute, enabling you to include full-speed video earlier than and after the slowed-down part to actually showcase the impact.
In good mild, outside, the slow-motion capture can produce some eye-catching results, however step inside and beneath artificial mild, or in low-light circumstances, the standard drops quite considerably, with footage turn into slightly noisy. Briefly, limit your slow-mo capturing to the good outdoor.
In case you’re extra into traditional video recording, the OnePlus 6 may also capture footage in 4K at 60fps.
Digital camera samples
Energy and interface
- Flagship Snapdragon 845 chipset and both 6GB or 8GB of RAM
- Android 8.1 with Oxygen OS (and Android P Beta suitable)
The tagline for the OnePlus 6 is ‘The velocity you want’, and to realize such velocity it makes use of a Snapdragon 845 chipset to keep every part operating smoothly.
OnePlus says it’s labored arduous to make sure there’s no slowdown or lag, optimizing the CPU and Adreno 630 GPU by as much as 30%, whereas they draw up to 30% much less power in comparison with the 5T.
This can, OnePlus promises, allow the OnePlus 6 to work simply as nicely in a yr’s time as whenever you take it out the field – so we’ll get back to you on that a yr from now…
... five months later, and the OnePlus 6 is among the many smartphones we've continued to make use of since its initial assessment, allowing us to control the newest software program updates, and gauge its efficiency over time.
We're happy to report that the OnePlus 6 continues to be operating smoothly, and shortly, several months since its launch, so nowadays it bodes nicely for the agency's one yr promise.
One other approach OnePlus is preserving the telephone slick is by not including an expandable storage choice. That is nothing new, as there’s never been a OnePlus handset with microSD help, with the firm sustaining that it will sluggish the telephone down.
For most users the 128GB center storage choice will probably be more than sufficient, while for power users there’s now a 256GB choice if more room is needed.
Nevertheless, there'll all the time be some who’ll be dissatisfied that the OnePlus 6 doesn’t quite supply the freedom and adaptability they’d like - and it barely flies in the face of the firm’s ‘Never Settle’ mantra.
One thing is for sure though: the OnePlus 6 is quick. With either 6GB or 8GB of RAM, there’s greater than sufficient efficiency underneath the hood to keep you going.
We reviewed the 8GB/128GB variant, and all the things ran easily, with quick load occasions and clean graphical efficiency.
It’s nonetheless not clear why you’d actually need 8GB of RAM in a smartphone – 6GB will possible suffice in most circumstances – however it means the OnePlus 6 ought to be nicely future-proofed.
Operating Geekbench four on the OnePlus 6 returned a powerful common multi-core score of 9100, which is best than the Sony Xperia XZ2, Galaxy Note 8 and Google Pixel 2 XL; nevertheless, the iPhone X nonetheless trumps the lot with a rating of over 10,000.
Nonetheless, considering that the OnePlus 6 is cheaper than all of these handsets it’s a superb outcome, and it simply exhibits how much uncooked grunt is housed inside the glass physique.
On-screen you’ll find Android Eight.1 – the newest software program from Google – with OnePlus’ own Oxygen OS operating excessive. On the floor, Oxygen is similar to inventory Android, offering a well-known expertise.
Nevertheless, head into the settings menu and also you’ll find a vary of further customization options, permitting you to fine-tune the handset to your specific requirements.
The OnePlus 6 inherits the gesture-control navigation which debuted on the OnePlus 5 and 5T, removing the necessity for a visual navigation bar and as an alternative counting on swiping gestures from the base of the display to move round.
It’s just like Apple’s gesture management on the iPhone X – the gestures are slightly totally different on the OnePlus 6 – and it permits even more display area for apps. This function isn’t enabled by default though, so you’ll need to turn it on in the settings.
One function which is missing nevertheless, is the power to tug the notification shade down utilizing the fingerprint scanner.
It’s a function we used ceaselessly on the 5T, so we have been dissatisfied to seek out it wasn’t out there on the OnePlus 6 – particularly given its bigger, taller display, which makes stretching a thumb all the best way to the highest all that harder.
OnePlus has yet to offer us with a cause why it’s not an choice on its new telephone, however we suspect it might be right down to the smaller footprint of the scanner, which may make performing a sliding motion harder.
One gesture that is retained for the fingerprint scanner is an extended press to snap a photograph, making selfie taking all the better.
There’s excellent news for these of you who want the newest software on their smartphone, as the OnePlus 6 is suitable with the Android P Beta, enabling you to trial the brand new software earlier than it’s formally launched by Google later this yr.
Be warned though: the Android P Beta just isn't remaining software, and will subsequently include quite a lot of bugs which might critically have an effect on the performance of the OnePlus 6, so set up it at your personal danger.
Films, music and gaming
With its larger, wider 19:9 facet ratio display the OnePlus 6 gives a terrific floor for watching video, particularly films.
Video doesn’t wrap around the notch, so none of the motion is obscured, with the OnePlus 6 routinely ‘hiding’ it with a black bar for a clear look.
The one real criticism we have now here is the display resolution. It’s ‘solely’ Full HD, and doesn’t help HDR content material, so in the event you’re a fan of the 4K HDR films and exhibits on the likes of Amazon Prime Video and Netflix you gained’t have the ability to take full advantage of their quality.
It’s not a problem more often than not, though, and we have been fortunately capable of stream exhibits from Prime Video at a very good quality.
As we’ve talked about, the only speaker’s placement on the base of the OnePlus 6 isn’t superb, and it’s simply muffled when held in landscape.
Audio high quality from this speaker is sweet sufficient for the odd YouTube video or music monitor, however when you’re settling down to observe a movie you’ll need one thing higher to pay attention on.
The good news is that the OnePlus 6 has a headphone jack, permitting you to plug in a set of headphones or external speaker setup. There’s also the choice to make use of wi-fi headphones because of Bluetooth 5.zero help.
The OnePlus 6 additionally comes with Qualcomm’s AptX audio enhancement know-how, supplying you with clearer, punchier audio over each wired and wireless connections.
OnePlus has revamped its Gaming Mode for the OnePlus 6 (previously referred to as Gaming DnD), which stops notifications getting in the best way of your gameplay and optimizes performance to scale back latency – good for uninterrupted PUBG (PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds) and Fortnite periods.
Now you can even choose to lock the display brightness and scale back the community exercise of other apps to make sure optimum enjoying circumstances always, while a dedicated battery-saver mode will hold you gaming for longer on titles that use the Unity Engine.
You'll be able to choose the video games you want Gaming Mode be enabled on, making certain you could still control notifications throughout your every day Candy Crush blast.
The OnePlus 6 is the brand's most well-rounded and grown-up telephone thus far, and placed alongside the likes of the iPhone X, Samsung Galaxy S9, Sony Xperia XZ2 and LG G7 ThinQ it definitely doesn’t look or feel misplaced.
It will not be fairly as completed an all-round package deal as the Galaxy S9, or carry the same cool attraction because the iPhone X, but when you consider the OnePlus 6 worth it’s troublesome to not be impressed by what’s on supply.
Performance is fluid, the display is brilliant and colourful, the design is interesting, and there’s a strong digital camera expertise available.
In case you can overlook the display resolution and the shortage of expandable storage, an official IP score, microSD slot and stereo audio system, the OnePlus 6 is a unbelievable Android flagship at an eye catching worth.
Who’s it for?
Anyone who’s in search of a flagship smartphone without making an enormous outlay ought to undoubtedly think about the OnePlus 6. It hits all the key points for a top-tier telephone, and delivers them in a clear and intelligent approach.
There are a couple of small compromises, however until you’re decided to have the very latest cutting-edge tech in your pocket they’re simply ignored.
Ought to I buy it?
You gained’t be disenchanted with what you get for the cash right here.
Positive, that is the costliest OnePlus telephone thus far, and it’s a shame the worth couldn’t be stored to the identical degree as its predecessor; however the improve is minimal, and the worth distinction between the 6 and the flagship handsets from the established players continues to be considerable.
The OnePlus 6 is pitted towards the highest flagships smartphones around, making certain fierce competitors, and we’ve rounded up some of its key rivals under.
Samsung Galaxy S9
The Samsung Galaxy S9 is presently our greatest telephone on the earth, and whereas it does supply greater than the OnePlus 6 (resembling a greater display and rear digital camera) it’s additionally considerably costlier.
In case you’re in search of the last word smartphone experience, and your finances can stretch to it, we’d nonetheless advocate the Galaxy S9; but if your funds are just a little tighter the OnePlus 6 is an honest various.

Notch? Verify. Face unlock? Examine. Dual rear cameras? Examine. Glass body? Examine. There are lots of similarities between the iPhone X and the OnePlus 6, but there’s also one massive difference: the worth.
The iPhone X might have the seems, the cool attraction and the smarter Face ID tech, however it’s also double the worth of the OnePlus 6.
It also runs iOS, the arch-enemy of Android, and for many individuals it’s both one OS or the opposite. Apple also gives the iPhone Eight and eight Plus if the X is somewhat rich in your blood, but they’re each nonetheless costlier than the OnePlus 6.

The OnePlus 6 isn’t the one reasonably priced flagship round, and the Honor 10 presents some equally stiff competition, and a fair lower cost tag.
It has a smaller 5.Eight-inch display, making it slightly simpler to hold in a single hand, plenty of energy beneath the hood, and its personal engaging glass design.
The OnePlus 6 appears and feels a bit classier, and its cameras are a contact higher than the Honor 10’s AI-enabled snappers, but in terms of bang in your buck each handsets supply it by the bucketload.
